Shih tzu – This dog was developed during the time of the Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi (Tz’u-shi, 1861 – 1908 where shih tzu got its name.

Based on recorded documents and paintings, the dog breed shih tzu is the result of the cross breeding of the Tibetan mountain dog or also known as “Lhasa Apso” and Pekingese, which was first seen in a city known as Peking. Such liking among the shih tzu dog breed was forged into individuals who were members of the royal family or any wealthy person. As a matter of fact thet are ones called as imperial shih tzu, due to the ownership of shih tzu dogs limited to royal families.

How Shih Tzu was introduced to other Countries and to the World

For some period of time the Chinese people would not take into consideration the idea of selling or trading the breed Shih Tzu to anyone. But in World War II, some British soldiers found a pair of Shih Tzu and sent it to England on the year 1930. After which, the Shih Tzu was then scattered all over England and then in Britain during the year 1946. The breed Shih Tzu was then later on recognized by the AKC as a Dog Breed on the year 1969.

But there came a time that extinction of the breed Shih Tzu nearly happened during the Communist Revolution in China. Luckily, the breed Shih Tzu was earlier introduced to other countries, which the ones which were bred outside China was used to re-populate the breed. The breed Shih Tzu is now considered as one of the most known and wanted dogs in the entire planet, which during the year 2007 the breed received a rating from AKC as the 9th out of 157 Dog Breeds of the whole world.

The breed Shih tzu is a very fun loving, friendly, and very joyful Dog Breed. As such, the breed Shih tzu is always looking for affection. He dislikes being alone with no one to play with. The breed Shih tzu is fond of staying indoors. The breed Shih tzu would want to stay inside to play and cuddle with their owner for hours. Shih tzu loves to accompany their owners wherever they will go, but special consideration should be given by owners during time of intense heat outside, because the breed Shih tzu is very sensitive to any weather changes specifically intense heat.

Appearance & Grooming:

The breed Shih tzu has a usual average height of 8 to 11 inches and an average weight of 9 to 16 pounds. This breed has double coating of fur which is usually long in length, flowing and are soft and has a straight outer coating which is combined with a thick and soft inner coat. The mixture of colors their coat comes in 3 different presentations; one solid color, mixture of two colors or a mixture of 3 colors. The colors in their fur may contain white, black, blue, brindle, gold or red.

In maintaining the beauty and hygiene of the breed Shih tzu, a regular brushing of 10 – 15 minutes of their outer and inner coat will do, and also to trim its fur every time it becomes long or usually every 6 weeks.

The breed Shih tzu is not very trainable and will be a difficult challenge to housebreak. But basing on their personality, they don’t require such deal of training because they are gentle and kind in nature. One should take into consideration their stubbornness and at times irresponsive to intense methods of training. In this sense, you have to practice consistency and patience upon training the breed Shih tzu.
